![]() ![]() Google Earth, since offered as a browser plugin has made the application very popular and there has been a 10 fold increase in its use making people take more and more interest in geography, particularly knowing about the topographic details of cities, houses and streets. It is only Google Earth Pro that can be used for commercial purposes. Google offered it under three categories, Google Earth, which was free and had limited features, Google Earth Plus, which has been discontinued and Google Earth Pro which requires the buyer to pay $399 annually. The program makes use of images from satellites and aerial photography. The company was taken over by Google in 2004. Google Earth as we know it today was an information program about earth, maps and geography that was developed by Keyhole Inc. You could even add each as a layer to one web map, then once added to ArcMap and Pro, you can turn each on or off as needed.Google Earth and Google Earth pro are two versions of the Google Earth software, one meant for amateurs and the other is meant for professionals using it to make money. Select “A Tile Layer” from the pulldown menu. Once logged in, open a new web map then click on Add and select “Add Layer from Web”. To do this, you need an ArcGIS Online account. Building on that example, I was able to do the same for ArcMap and Pro, but in a round about way. Well here is an early Christmas present just for you … yes you can!īefore you proceed, think about why you would want a crowd sourced Google Maps basemap in your GIS anyway? There are better solutions today, like the basemaps provided by ESRI or even your own creations. ![]()
